Review: Greg Jeff’s It’s All In Your Head

13100856_794665073997047_6521924346496202514_nThe family that makes scary movies together, stays together. OK, that’s not really a saying, but I think it’s cute that the creation of It’s All In Your Head was a family affair. Not in the sense that the cast and crew are forever bonded by the journey they embarked on together, but this short film was quite literally put into the world by a family of indie film-makers. It’s All In Your Head is written, directed and produced by Greg Jeffs, co-produced by Colette Jeffs and stars Addison Jeffs. It’s only because of this relation that they tackled a story involving a mother telling her child a story about the monster in the closet. The only question is, who is the monster and who is the prey in this twisted bedtime tale?

Caroline Buzanko, Josh Lenner, Shawn Brons and Maureen Jones also star in this classic monster story told via action and narration. I think that’s one of the things I liked most about It’s All In Your Head, the way it’s laid out brings me back to my childhood while also turning that nostalgia on its head in a very suspenseful and fun way. I think a lot of people are going to have that reaction, too. The bedtime story is told by means of a poem and you can’t help but try to rhyme along while you’re watching. It’s hard to describe It’s All In Your Head as a straight-up horror film because there’s so many things that are just… cute.

And it’s classic! It doesn’t use jump scares or nudity (obviously) and it doesn’t have excessive gore. It relies on its story, cast and practical monster effects to drive the story and that’s something I can get behind. I would really like to champion the special effects team for creating the monsters and making full body suits that look like Jawa’s from Star Wars. I’d also like to give applause to the camera crew and cinematographer for the expertly lit scenes, smokey atmosphere and killer angles. These two departments and their professionalism is what will set It’s All In Your Head apart from other child themed horror titles. This one’s got a twist at the end, too, and I’m glad Greg Jeff’s was able to think outside the box in another amusing way.

It’s All In Your Head is simple, nostalgic and entertaining. It’s got awesome practical effects, great camera work and features a killer voice over. It should exist in every horror anthology that comes out in the next few years that needs a good childhood story. final score: 8.5 out of 10.
