Artist Bryan Moore Breathes New Life Into Lovecraft Cinema

Sculptor Bryan Moore, known for his bronze bust series of horror icons H.P. Lovecraft, Edgar Allan Poe and Bram Stoker is setting his sights on the world of filmmaking.

In 1999, Moore filmed the Lovecraft short story “Cool Air”; a faithful adaptation that has become a fan favorite over the years and is now creating the Arkham Cinema DVD label, dedicated to filming the stories of H.P. Lovecraft set in the time and locales that they were written by the Old Gent.

“I was able to shoot “Cool Air” in the last days of shooting on film right before digital video became the norm for independent filmmakers. It was very costly to shoot and process all that film back then, but now just about anybody with enough talent and skill can create a decent micro budget movie on digital video and distribute it themselves. As my favorite author was always H.P. Lovecraft, I felt that a filmmaker could really do justice to his work if they committed to doing it right. There are no cel phones, uber drivers, internet access or “easy outs” in a Lovecraft story which is why those isolated characters in bad situations rarely got out with their sanity intact. The early 1920’s lends itself very well to that story scenario where protagonists were truly on their own to survive a Lovecraftian nightmare.”

Moore is currently running a Kickstarter campaign for the Blu-ray release of his film “Cool Air” in the new “Duo-Chrome” edition, a process of color tinting black and white footage, much like Lon Chaney Sr.’s 1925 opus “The Phantom of the Opera”:

Once that DVD/Blu-ray is released, Moore plans on shooting Lovecraft’s “The Shadow over Innsmouth” a pet project of his long in development.

“The Shadow over Innsmouth” has been in the works for a while now” Moore continues. “While the budget and scope of the project will certainly be much larger than “Cool Air”, it’s entirely possible to create a visual world that makes people feel exactly as they did when they first read the tale. It’s one of Lovecraft’s best works and deserves to be done the way Lovecraft originally envisioned it. I have a great project team lined up to help me realize that vision, all Lovecraft fans themselves just as dedicated as I am to do justice to the Providence master’s work. ”
