Lollipop Chainsaw: Are We Really Not Getting A Sequel?

Are we really not getting a sequel to Lollipop Chainsaw?

The 2012 hack-and-slash horror-comedy game is low key one of my favorite video games of all time, and that’s due to my affinity for valley girls who can kick undead ass (thank you, Joss Whedon). Who could ever forget Juliet Starling (voiced by Tara Strong), the perky blonde San Romero High cheerleader who’s born into a family of zombie fighters? Who remembers Nick (voiced by Michael Rosenbaum), Juliet’s boyfriend who survives a zombie bite as a severed head that’s clipped to the lollipop lovin’ air-head’s belt-buckle? Who remembers the assorted family members and their arsenal of weapons that aid her in the war against zombie overlords and reanimated Master Killabilly? Really, there isn’t a single character in Lollipop Chainsaw that I didn’t enjoy and that kind of meant I wanted to see them again. So, what gives? It’s 5 years later. Where the Hell is my desired sequel?

I don’t think I’m alone in pining for another Lollipop Chainsaw installment. Fan submitted reviews called the game above average and critical reviews were mixed to positive. The video game received positive reviews from respected sources such as Destructoid, Edge, Game Informer, Game Revolution, Game Spot, Game Zone, Metacritic and Polygon with Digital Spy and IGN being the only critics that seemed enthused. Not only that, but the game currently holds a 4.5 out of 5 star rating on Amazon.com based on over 300 player reviews. This, of course, leads the way to the topic of sales. Did Lollipop Chainsaw turn a profit? The answer is: yes. In the first two years of release, the hack-and-slash story sold over 1,000,000 copies worldwide and is sure to have amassed another few thousand since then. Five years since Juliet’s debut, Lollipop Chainsaw stands as Grasshopper Manufacture Inc.’s second highest seller after Let It Die in 2017. While the budget of this adventure isn’t known to the public, I think it’s safe to say it made it back with over $35,000,000 in sales.

Then we need to address whether or not there’s another story to squeeze out of this flashy, colorful, fast-paced, chainsaw gore-fest. The answer to that is also: yes. Part of Juliet’s appeal to fans is that she’s a ditsy, scantily clad blonde with big boobs who destroys legions of zombies with specialized weapons and wit. If you take the aspect of her being a cheerleader and amplify it, then there’s a good chance Juliet was a cheerleader when she went to college or went on to perform at minor league or major league sporting events. That could serve as the central basis for another game. All one needs to do is take out the high school element and add in a college in its place and we’re ready for another romp. Nick could be jealous of all the hunky college jocks, Rosalind – Juliet’s younger sister – can be in peril once again after attending a college party under her parents’ nose, etc. Making Lollipop Chainsaw such a simple but fun idea easily paved the way for future stories. She can’t be done yet! A warrior is never done!

Or better yet… Can we get a live action version? Jessica Nigri starred as Juliet Starling in a number of IGN produced segments that were meant to support Lollipop Chainsaw. All of the videos have over 100,000 views on YouTube. I can only imagine what magic could be done with a bigger budget and a bigger platform. This should be seriously considered, too.
