Wish Upon Opens At #7 This Weekend.

Summer blockbusters have effectively kept Wish Upon from making a solid debut at the box office. The latest Planet of the Apes movie also premiered in theaters this weekend, and with Spider Man, Despicable Me 3 and Baby Driver in its way, Wish Upon never stood a chance. Hell, even Wonder Woman was able to best the new horror film from Annabelle director John R. Leonetti after spending seven weeks in theaters already.

Sent to 2,250 theaters this weekend by Broad Green Pictures, Wish Upon came in at #7 with an estimated $5,586,000 in American ticket sales. This doesn’t spell disaster yet, as the low placement for this premiering movie is due to the monsters released ahead of it. Wish Upon was produced on a budget of $12,000,000 and if you factor in $10,000,000 for media and marketing, we’re looking at an over-all budget of $22,000,000. As long as it sees a strong Sunday, it should be able to make back half of its money by the all important Friday chart. Word of mouth for this flick is terrible so far, so where it goes after that I cannot say.

Elsewhere on the chart, shark movie 47 Meters Down comes in at #11 with $1,200,000 in ticket sales. It has now officially crossed the $40,000,000 mark. A Ghost Story comes in at #23 with $146,000 in ticket sales, which is basically what it made last week. The influx in gross can be attributed to it expanding its reach from 4 theaters to 20 theaters. It’ll be interesting to see if it gains more venues and its tally is $288,000.
