Augmented reality games are beginning to roll out a quicker pace thanks to the worldwide record breaking sales of Niantic’s Pokemon Go. While the monster catching game is still being played and still making tons of money (Level 33, Team Valor, bitches!), a time will come when a new smartphone app will snatch the crown and become the new face of somewhat-virtual reality games. Clearly, the only thing that could break the streak set by Pikachu, Bulbasaur, and Snorlax is… zombies. And not just any zombies – Walking Dead zombies!
Yesterday, Apple announced that an augmented reality game based on The Walking Dead is headed for smartphones near the end of 2017. While a release date is yet to be set in stone, the smartphone app is receiving tons of press and promotion, and with 12,000,000 people still tuning in for each new episode of the hit AMC series, the potential for this game to be a success is massive. Find weapons, save lives, and massacre zombie hordes in The Walking Dead: Our World. It goes without saying that I’m taking off from work as soon as this baby hits the mobile app store!
The Walking Dead: Our World will see players discovering weapons and other treasures while investigating nature and buildings in the real world. And you’ll even be aided by characters from the game in your journey to rebuild humanity! According to The Verge, AMC has promised that the game, “will enable players to fully immerse themselves into the action of the hit TV show by blending digital objects, such as characters and other game elements, with the players’ own environment.”
