Winchester Off to a Rocky, Third Place Start This Weekend.

The new ghost story inspired by true events, Winchester, is off to a rocky start during its opening weekend in America theaters. Winchester is reported to have made $9,250,000 in ticket sales between February 2 and February 4, 2018; placing it in the #3 spot behind Jumanji ($11,000,000) and Maze Runner: The Death Cure ($10,200,000). The Jumanji reboot looks destined to nap its fifth nonconsecutive week at #1 come Friday.

Winchester was released to 2,480 theaters by Lionsgate, which a decent number of venues but still slightly lower than other big weekend debuts. Another issue plaguing Winchester is extremely negative reviews and low word of mouth. Many reviews are calling the film dull and unnecessary, and relying on the talents of Helen Mirren isn’t a big enough ploy to get horror fans in seats. Although a budget has yet to be revealed, I find it difficult to believe that Winchester is going to be a success story for Lionsgate.

Elsewhere on the chart this weekend, The Shape of Water came in at #9 with $4,300,000 and Insidious: The Last Key came in at #20 with $1,450,000 in ticket sales.
