There have been some scary characters over the years who have become hugely popular after appearing in hit movies or other forms of entertainment. In fact, one could argue that many of them have even gained legendary status and this has allowed them to go on to be a success in other areas of entertainment too. Let’s take a look at which scary characters have gone on to be mainstream successes and household names.
Freddy Krueger is one of the entertainment world’s most popular serial killers who was brought to life in Wes Craven’s A Nightmare on Elm Street in 1984. Krueger is instantly recognizable due to his burnt face and the glove he wears which sports long, sharp razors. It’s this glove, and the attached razors, that Krueger uses to kill his victims in their dreams, which also causes them to die in real life too. While Krueger is powerful in a dream world, in the real world, he’s as vulnerable as everyone else.
Count Dracula, or Dracula for short, is said to be the original vampire. He’s the inspiration behind many other vampire characters who have appeared over the years, as well as werewolves and other supernatural characters. In his early days Count Dracula is seen using many different supernatural abilities such as shapeshifting and superhuman strength, which he is believed to have acquired from the devil. His survival is based on him drinking the blood of humans and his bite is enough to turn his victims into fellow vampires too.
Phantom of the Opera
The Phantom of the Opera, otherwise known as Erik or The Phantom, was born deformed and disfigured, which is why he ran away and began living with a group of gypsies. It’s during this time that he learns great skills such as illusion, magic and ventriloquism. The Phantom’s life progresses until he is working at the opera house where he comes across vocalist Christine. Christine falls for an arts benefactor called Raoul instead, so The Phantom must enact a plan to keep her with him.
Norman Bates is the lead character of one of the most famous horror movies of all time, Psycho. It’s believed Bates suffered emotional abuse from his mother, Norma, as a child, so he lived an isolated life with her until Joe Considine came along. Bates killed both his mother and Considine due to jealousy. With this he developed dissociative identity disorder which saw him assume his mother’s personality. This is where Bates’ character really develops as he takes on the role of both himself and his mother in murderous fashion.
All four characters have enjoyed frightening success over the years. This ranges from novels to movies, right through to games. Scary characters are some of the most popular in mainstream entertainment today so it’s really no surprise to see them appear in all manner of different formats. In fact, the extent to which how far these guys have touched our lives is underlined with the likes of Norman Bates and Erik being instrumental in the online casino world too; with several online casino sites such as Unibet offering slot game titles like Psycho and Phantom of the Opera being a huge success.
