The Meg Takes A Bite Out of Theaters This Weekend with $44 Million in Ticket Sales.

It was a good weekend for horror and science fiction at the box office. Shark movie The Meg and Creepy Pasta character Slender Man both made their debut in theaters across America August 10 to August 12th.

The Meg was the #1 movie this weekend, easily taking a bite out of the box office with $44,500,000 in ticket sales. It should be able to hold the spot until Friday when the all important week’s end chart comes out. The Meg was released to 4,118 screens by Warner Bros., and they’re going to have their work cut out for them. Estimated global cost for The Meg, including promotion, comes in at $400,000,000; so while it seems like it made a lot this weekend, it’s got a long way to go to break even. Luckily, foreign markets are eating it up and have already added $97,000,000 to that total for a gross of $141,500,000. I just hope this movie doesn’t dive into shallower waters in its second week.

Slender Man was also successful in its own right. It was sent to 2,358 movie theaters by Screen Gem, with its budget being $25,000,000 including promotion. Slender Man was the #4 movie this weekend, and it took in $11,325,000 in ticket sales. It should have no problem making back its total costs, and should add a little bit of lucrative sales to Screen Gems’ pockets, but I don’t see it doing much more than that.

It’ll be interesting to see how this all plays out!
