Special Effects Legend John Carl Buechler Has Passed Away

I’m sure you’ve all read about the passing of special effects legend John Carl Buechler. I was working late and didn’t have time to post accordingly, but I still want to pay tribute to him in written form. At one point in time, I was putting a lot of effort into doing gore effects, and John Carl Buechler was definitely someone I aspired to be. I just shared an article about his battle with prostate cancer a month ago, and it appears he lost that battle.

John was just 66-years-old at the time of his death on Monday, March 18th 2019. A GoFundMe page was set up in his name in February to help with his mounting medical bills. A statement was released on the fundraiser this afternoon saying:

“John passed away Monday March 18th at 1:00am. His family is absolutely devastated as are many of his fans and friends. His wife who works for the school system has been left with thousands of dollars worth of bills and the position to care for three children. Please donate to this newly captioned memorial fund help them get through this terrible tough time. To all of you who sent good wishes and love please know that your communication really lifted his spirits.”

The page is still open and you can donate to it here.

John’s special effects and make-up work can be found in Sorceress, Android, Trancers, Ghoulies, Troll, TerrorVision, From Beyond, Friday the 13th Part VII, A Nightmare on Elm Street 4, Halloween 4, Demonic Toys, The Fear, Bikini Drive-In, Blood Surf, The Mummy’s Kiss, The Gingerdead Man, Hatchet, Re-Animator and Piranha. He was also a writer, producer and director, most notice-ably for Troll and Friday the 13th Part VII.

What a career. What a legacy. Can you imagine having worked on all of the big three slashers?

R.I.P. John Carl Buechler…
