As much as I love movies I still find myself confused by how one particular story can be milked to the point it barely resembles the original film, i.e. Paranormal Activity, while fantastic and clever films can never get funding to continue their fantastic stories.
A few days ago I reviewed the 2017 short horror comedy Shitters. It was clever as hell and pretty funny. Sadly, it was a no-budget affair so any sort of follow up depended solely on the filmmaker to raise the funds. After 3 years he was able to make a sequel appropriately titled The Return of Shitters. It was even better than the first film.
**Spoiler Alert** This short, once again, follows the shitters and they wreak havoc on some poor unsuspecting soul but they have bigger plans than partying. This time around they summon a giant shit monster to destroy the world. **Spoiler Alert**
Shitters is such an absurd and ridiculous story that has so much potential. The story can literally go anywhere and I really like where Mahlberg took it with The Return of Shitters. I’m down with any movie that brings a bit of a Satanic cult and kaiju fun.
The acting in this one is pretty much the same as before. The cast is extremely small and they don’t really have screen time to show the viewer what they really have. However, the puppets are the star of the show. They all have their own unique personality that works for the film. I really enjoyed watching them on screen.
The story for this one is not what I was expecting this follow up to go but it was a good surprise. Seeing the little shits summon a giant dookie to destroy a city was the movie that I didn’t know I needed in my life. It was fun and still leaves itself open for more shit carnage. I can’t wait to see where we are going next.
Finally, this is not a bloody horror short. We get some sock puppets, some miniature sets, and cheap visuals but they work for the film. The ending and how well it looked really impressed me. Overall, The Return of Shitters is a must for no budget cinema fans or fans of absurd cult films. I highly recommend you spent the 10 or so minutes on this one. It’s well worth it.
