Seeing Things: Author’s Medium Grandmother Inspires Cinematic, Realm-Bending Horror Novel

Suzanne Linsey-Mitellas’ grandmother had a unique ability as a spiritualist medium, especially her skills to communicate with supernatural, often dark forces. But the stories Linsey-Mitellas was told are radically different from how the spirit world is often portrayed in popular culture.

As a writer, Linsey-Mitellas committed herself to redefining the supernatural literary genre. Her latest release, ‘Seeing Things’, seeks to present the spirit world (both its good and bad sides) as they actually play out in reality.

Synopsis: Rachel Holloway is a school teacher with an unremarkable life. That is, until one day when everything changes forever and she is given the gift (or is it curse?) of being able to see and speak with the dead – amongst others… As she grapples with this strange new ability, she encounters many colourful characters, both living and dead.

Some try to guide her, while others use her power for their own ends. When a girl is brutally murdered, Rachel is thrust further into a labyrinthine world of spirits that are trapped in a limbo state between earth and whatever lies beyond. She soon discovers that what lies in the shadows is legion and some things that exist in this dimension are far more evil than anyone could imagine.

“When you think of demons, we all default to images of a possessed person rattling around in a bed as Catholic priests watch over them,” explains the author. “Instead, I wanted to mix characters, tones and perspectives in a fresh way, that closer mirror the real spirit world my grandmother frequently came into contact with.”

Continuing, “The boundaries are not as clear cut as movies and TV make out. The scope is far greater and so much more co-mingling between our world and the spirit world is possible. This book seeks to set the record straight and portray things more factually, while still presenting a narrative that is hugely entertaining and engrossing.”
