The Shudder originals and exclusives have really been hitting hard over the last year or so with some of them being my favorites of the year. However, not all of these films are movies that I dig. There has been a few that just wasn’t for me. That doesn’t make them bad movies but they wasn’t something I enjoyed. When I first saw the trailer for Lucky I was hooked. I wanted to see it so bad and when I saw that RLJE Films was releasing it on DVD I had to snag a copy to review. I requested a copy and soon one was sent my way. Thanks guys!

**Spoiler Alert** The film follows author May (Grant) who is working on her next novel while at home with her husband. However, something strange is happening to her. Every night a man with a disfigured face breaks into her home and tries to kill her. To make matters worse, her husband is nowhere to be found. With the police not cooperating with her she is left to take matters into her own hand. **Spoiler Alert**

When I watched the trailer for Lucky for the first time I was so pulled in. My mind was racing with what kind of story it was. All the possibilities of what kind of meta-slasher I was going to enjoy raced through my mind. Sadly, the movie was nothing like I thought it was. It’s not a bad movie, in fact, I enjoyed it to some extent but I found myself not invested in it as much as I should have.

The acting in this one is fairly decent. I enjoyed watching Burkle and Singh in their roles along with the supporting cast but there was several scenes where I felt Grant’s character was a little flat. I was expecting a much bigger character from her that would stand out from the story instead of blending into it. The story for this one is not bad the way it is but the “twist” we get doesn’t really have the impact I was hoping for. The movie could have went so many different ways and during the segment where we found Grant’s character in the car garage I thought we was about to have it. Sadly, it doesn’t and we go the path that we actually get. Like I said, it’s not a bad story but as a slasher fan I was hoping for something more.

Finally, we get plenty of blood and a few brutal kills that fit with the story nicely. The kills are nothing unique or memorable but if you want some blood and fun practical effects then you are in the right place. Overall, Lucky is a solid first time watch but don’t expect something that will stick with you. It has some fun kills and a story that goes further than most but still doesn’t deliver that bang we are looking for.
