Edge of Light Media

The bold move is considered key to not only Blu-ray, but to overall HD acceptance as the majors now control virtually all the manufacturing and distribution of the emerging Blu-ray disc technology while most films produced in the U.S. and abroad are made outside the studio system. EOL has actively begun seeking Blu-ray arrangements with indie film distributors, mini-majors and TV production companies for their new releases and catalog titles and a manufacturing plant is currently under construction by Hansen in Spokane, Washington.

The new joint venture will team Daly’s Film and Music Entertainment (FLME:Pk) with Hansen’s Blue Ray Technologies Inc.. The new Edge of Light Media offices will handle sales and authoring out of Film and Music’s new offices at 5900 Wilshire in Los Angeles while manufacturing and fulfillment will be handled by Blue Ray’s new Spokane plant. The operation will be overseen by Lon Gibby and Gibby Media Group with Bobby McGee handling worldwide sales for EOL.

Daly is known for his film industry savvy, and has produced Oscar winners like “Platoon” and “The Last Emperor” as well as “The Terminator.” Hansen was one of the first manufacturers of both films and games in DVD format. Recently, he has acquired BD (Blu-ray Disc) rights to several catalogs and will announce release schedules shortly.

EOL Media will truly be the first and only Independent authoring/manufacturing/distribution company of its kind. With the competition between HD-DVD & Blu-ray technologies, Blue Ray chairman Hansen noted the stronger marketing of Blu-ray and together with Daly chose this format to create the new business.

“Indies have concerns they will lose control or flexibility over their largest revenue source, video in whatever form the public wants, as America marches to 70 million HD TV homes by 2010,” Hansen said, quoting figures from Nielsen. He added, “Blu-ray has an undeniable edge over the competing HD-DVD format due to increased capacity, more studio support, and more than one million Blu-ray players already in U.S. homes.”

He noted that presently, Blu-ray is being handled by media and electronics giants, largely overseas. “This highly sophisticated and productive new plant in Spokane brings jobs and manufacturing back to America,” Hansen said. “Independents may also appreciate that the plant will be environmentally conscious and strict safeguards will protect them from the video piracy which is occurring at plants outside the USA.”

Film and Music Entertainment, Inc. is an independent entertainment production and distribution company, which annually produces theatrical feature films for worldwide distribution. Blue Ray Technologies, Inc. (www.blueraytechnologies.com) is the first U.S. owned and operated manufacturer of Blu-ray discs, and is committed to bringing bleeding edge distribution media to the independent filmmaker.

Gibby said the new plant would be up and running by late spring and said “This Blu-ray plant in Spokane will provide the independent film industry a competitive, safe and protected environment in which to grow their distribution business”

The name “Edge of Light” refers to Blu-ray’s position on the light spectrum.
