Welcome to Dreadville

So there seems to be a trend within Indie Horror. Not just zombie movies and slasher of sorts anymore, but something more underground, more brutal. Welcome to Dreadville show us that brutality and torture is great entertainment. And yes, it is great entertainment. Twisted huh?

BubbleNutz Production gives us the Dreadville series. There are a few shorts within the DVD I had got in the mail, and both of them seem to have a similar theme to them. Revenge, drugs, alcohol abuse are the main topics. The first one is about a man, who seemed to be captured, and tortured beyond belief. Within this is a story brought to you in the beginning by bits and pieces, of a man losing his son or something. There is a detective at the door and he is asking if this guy has seen this other person. He has been missing for a while now and you wonder what the deal is. Cut to the middle of the movie, and this dude is getting the shit kicked out of him, with various methods of torture from drills to hammer and nail in the nether regions! It makes you think one thing and in the end, you might be right, or you might be wrong. It’s hard to say. This one does a good job of getting you to think something and then feel sorry for the guy getting tortured, but there is a twist. And no I’m not going to tell you either. Up close and personal views of the torture are done well, and the overall feeling of the movie is pain!

The other flick is about some drug dealers dishing out some crazy ass new drugs that get you fucked up. This guy has lost his girl, job, etc. over the drug addiction and nothing seems to get him on the right track. Then steps in his girlfriend with some sobering news. From then on out he tries to get clean, but with no luck. The drugs seem to grab him by the balls and put him right back in the position he was at the first place. Nothing seems to work for him, and he sees some strange shit in his dreams every once in a while. He ends up facing a problem that he can never fix in the end. With this there are some good special effects for bloody track marks and such that puss out and explode. Job well done with that.

These 2 movies are only the beginning for the series. There are 6 of them all together and in my belief they are all connected in some manner or another. Dreadville does a good job of getting you to feel for the characters and the story seems to move along without any holes for the most part. Done on a very low budget the special effects are nothing to gasp over, and some of the editing could be cleaned up a bit (for sure in the first movie) but all of that is expected in a low budget movie. It’s about getting your point out to the audience and having them feel your movie. This does a good job of that.

I wonder how these got to be on DVD. Meaning, this almost seems like true feelings or real happenings coming to light on the screen. There is a lot of that in movies, and most of it is done well…this one including. Not that this ever happened, but the story behind the brutality may have some truth to it.

All in all they are both good movies and worth the hour it takes to watch them. Brutal and unforgiving!
