Review: Yeti

Great hopping gorillas! Well, maybe giant bouncing snow beasts is more to the point, here. Believe it or not, Yeti, a Sci Fi Network original, is a ‘great’ film for horror fans just looking for something truly silly and of little (or no) consequence. A bunch of hot babes and muscle bound hunks crash in the Himalayas and soon become food for a great big hairy behemoth – who in the project’s more ludicrously desirable moments actually pounces around like an oversized tennis ball throughout the snowy landscape – once even with a beautiful ‘Fay Wray’ in tow.

Yes, this is all nonsense but if you can let loose of all high brow (or even lower brow) horror instincts, there is fun to be had here. The cast commits to the material as much as they are able and features such new millennium horror regulars as Crystal Lowe (Black Christmas, Final Destination 3, Wrong Turn 2) alongside such veteran performers as Ed Marinaro (Hill Street Blues, Urban Legend 3) and Peter DeLuise (21 Jump Street, Children of the Night). There is even a brother-sister act here in the form of heroine Carly Pope (Popular) and her brother Kris Pope (who has a lot of fun playing a beleaguered football player who endures the worst beating of the entire cast and still keeps on ticking – even up until the ‘surprise’ ending).

There is some violence and bloodshed to be sure – including head pulping, shotgun blasting, limb ripping and broken airplane ejection. While it’s definitely not up to Tom Savini levels, Yeti still might remind you of the days that got you into horror in the first place – all that time spent watching the beautiful women and men (Ah-h, those 30 year old teens!) of the sequel slashers getting theirs in delightfully gruesome ways.
