Happy Cloud Pictures, the heinously happening love child of Amy Lynn Best and Mike Watt, offers up another femme centered, fun n frightful frolic with Splatter Movie: The Director’s Cut (written by Watt and directed by Best).

Best, who always provides a strong feminine perspective in (and on) the horror field, plays an inventive director of a film-within-a-film here and she and Watt smartly lampoon and embrace the standard horror movie clichés (including wanna-be horror starlets) with frisky panache and a true sense of fun.

The project is a bit unwieldy at times, but here too much is closer to just enough and unlike many no-budget projects, the Best-Watt team has a smart take on their material and wisely employ genre legend Debbie Rochon and upcoming horror queens like Sofiya Smirnova (Fast Zombies with Cars) and Elske McCain (Poultrygeist) to help make their vision a bloody reality.

Most enjoyable here, perhaps, is the performance of make-up legend Tom Sullivan (The Evil Dead series). Sullivan is genial and natural and seems to be having a ball with all of the movie’s quirky twists and turns.
