pitcover Into the Pit ReviewInto the Pit is a new documentary about the lives of the Deadpit guys Wes Vance and Aaron Frye, better know as “Uncle Bill” (Aaron) and “The Creepy Kentuckian” (Wes). Here is a brief synopsis:

Into The Pit: The Shocking Story of Deadpit.Com is a rich story of friendship, diverging dreams, blatant escapism, and childhood nostalgia set against a high contrast rural backdrop.

Into The Pit tells the story of Wes Vance and Aaron Frye, two seemingly unremarkable Kentuckians who have lived in the small town of Prestonsburg their entire lives. They live in a world where family, coal, bluegrass, hunting and church are the pillars of life itself. For a couple of guys whose main interests in life are horror films, professional wrestling, and heavy metal; staving off boredom meant taking some serious and inventive measures. They needed an outlet, and in 2005 they found one, creating an Internet-based “Horror Talk Radio” show called Deadpit.com. Forming a pair of wacky alter egos by the names of “Uncle Bill” (Aaron) and “The Creepy Kentuckian” (Wes), the duo hosts a weekly MP3 show that features the latest horror news, film reviews, and in-depth interviews with a roster of horror royalty: John Carpenter, Joe Dante and George A. Romero, among many others.

This movie really gets into the lives and behind the scenes of Deadpit. It tells the tale of how they met, got started with the whole Deadpit podcasts and really shows what goes into making the show. More importantly its an emotional journey with them as they struggle to find out what it is they really want from the show the choices Aaron faces. Dealing with the show and his school, Aaron is conflicted with what he wants to do with his life. Either continue with the show or continue with his schoolwork and ultimately his career.

This has a nice feel to the movie getting you into the heads of both of them with some great background info and some old school video footage of them when they first started. I’m sure most people are familiar with Deadpit, but not necessarily with the men that run the show. Growing up in a rural area, they turned to horror movies as an outlet and in doing so developed a love for the genre. You get a feel for the town they grew up in and the challenges they faced being so called “outcasts” in their own community. I mean if you say you like horror movies, blood and guts, killers, etc.. in such a small religious community you would be an outcast as well.

The movie moves along at a good pace and never really gets “boring” as some documentaries can get. Anyone that is a fan of the genre can really relate to both of them and the struggles the faced growing up in such a small town. There are a bunch of great interviews with celebs in the genre such as Kane Hodder, John Landis, Betsy Palmer, Kevin S. Tenney, Uwe Boll, and many more.

I loved the fact that these guys are just a couple of regular people that wanted to spout off about something they love and even though the show became a huge success, both of them really stayed grounded and never let the fame get to their heads. This movie takes you on a journey with them to several horror conventions, local comic book shops, and really shows what they are all about. You can appreciate the show even more after seeing this and hearing what both Wes and Aaron have gone through and what they are heading for in the future.

Rusty Robot Productions does a great job of giving you a documentary that not only informs but moves you a little. Everyone deals with conflicts in their own lives…. even the Deadpit guys!
