An impressively filmed hick horror entry, Rage also mixes in a bit of supernatural backing and the psychological notion that our childhood memories are always a mere axe blow away.

A bit too long (with a series of opening killings reminiscent of the recent Friday the 13th reimagining), Rage truly shows its colors with its appealing cast. These main players portray a group of recently re-indoctrinated soldiers whom, along with their girlfriends, take a camping trip to help ease their way back into society. Of course, as all good fright film fans know, the group soon meets up with shifty law enforcement and a killer with a jones for the meat of city folk. Led by co-director/writer Chris Cones (who has the true presence of a major action film star), the primary actors all relate strongly with Achilles Gacis making a truly repellant killer and Allison West, an engaging heroine. Sean Eichenberg (as the local, doubting sheriff) meanwhile brings on a bucket load of presence and voracious screen strength, as well.

While the blood does indeed flow here, for the most part, the filmmakers ignore the vivid, torture porn ascetics (aka the Wrong Turn series) generally associated with this type of film and explore the emotional make-up of their vivid characters instead. While this may disappoint fans of squealing limbs, it definitely points to a more serious and exciting direction for producers Cones and Eichenberg (along with co-director Jason Jay Crabtree) in the future.

  1. Rage was mentally stimulating. The story behind the film was superbly brought on screen. It was in a realm of its own for horror flicks.
