THE DARK CARNIVAL HORROR FILM FESTIVAL – ‘The Greatest Show Unearthed’

Announces Festival Dates and Call For Submissions

Bloomington, IN – The fourth annual Dark Carnival is a week-long celebration of horror, featuring live entertainment, celebrity guests, merchandise vendors, filmmaking workshops and more. This year’s event runs from November 19 through 21, 2010, with pre-show events happening throughout the week.

The festival presents more than 30 independent horror films from every corner of the globe, with screenings divided into separate sessions at multiple venues, including the historic Buskirk-Chumley, a 1930s-era movie theater with state-of-the-art digital projection on a 30 by 20 foot screen.

Now beginning its fourth year, Dark Carnival has enjoyed considerable success, attracting visiting filmmakers from New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Austin, London and Toronto – and in 2009, the festival was recognized as one of the “Top 25 Film Fests Worth the Entry Fee,” by MovieMaker Magazine.

Past festivals have welcomed a variety of celebrity guests including Ken Foree (Dawn of the Dead, Devil’s Rejects), Michael Berryman (The Hills Have Eyes), and Tiffany Shepis (Nightmare Man), as well as a variety of live entertainment, including carnival sideshows, fire dancers, performance artists and musical guests.

This year will be no exception, as we are pleased to announce that syndicated film critic and actor Joe Bob Briggs (The Daily Show/Comedy Central; Casino; Face/Off) will be our master of ceremonies. (Additional guests will be announced as we get closer to the event.)

Dark Carnival is currently accepting submissions for 2010 and festival organizers are looking for original, cutting edge independent films in the horror, dark fantasy and sci-fi genres. Both short and feature-length films are accepted, as well as music videos and trailers. The final deadline for submission is September 25, 2010. Dark Carnival has become known for presenting a variety of live entertainment and indie horror films, and 2010 promises to be our best year yet.

This year, Dark’s Grand Guignol Theatre, a truly unique blend of cinema and live horror entertainment, is proud to present a follow-up to our 2009 smash hit Bloomington After Midnight.

The original Grand Guignol Theater was founded in Paris in the late 1800s and was famous for its short horror plays featuring gory special effects in their notoriously bloody climaxes.

Popular long before the advent of Hollywood, these plays were the precursor to the modern horror film.

Dark Carnival is pleased to present our tribute to these early horror shows with a bloody hybrid of live theatre and cinema – grindhouse style. Presented in an intimate venue, the audience becomes a part of the backdrop in which live gore effects and fast-paced storytelling promise a shocking experience that ends at the stroke of midnight.

Last year’s production sold out all three shows to standing-room-only crowds, and 2010 promises to be even bigger and bloodier!

The festival continues throughout the weekend, with a “Rave to the Grave” Dance Party, celebrity guest  appearances, a horror-themed art exhibit, vendor/merchandise area, and a VIP banquet/afterparty.

Most importantly, Dark Carnival will be presenting over 30 of the best independent horror films from around the world – two days worth of screenings – at the historic Buskirk-Chumley Theater in downtown Bloomington, IN.

Festival passes go on sale July, 2010.

The Dark Carnival is sponsored by The Buskirk-Chumley Theater, and the Evil By The Needle Tattoos, and Campus Costume.
