Void
Review By Sharon Foss

FBI Agent Liz Metera, played by Jennifer Christopher, is investigating a series of strange murders that look to be the work of a serial killer. However, never in her training could she be prepared for what actually is happening in town. This is the basis for Void, a 20-minute short film written and directed by Meredith Ann Berg through AFI’s Directing Workshop for Women.

The hidden link for detective Metera is Avery Wallace, (played by an innocently creepy Michael Len), a child who also was attacked, but survived to tell the tale. His father, actor Tim Guinee of Iron Man 2, has scared the child into not cooperating with the agent, making her job that much harder.

But is Avery the key to what is happening here?

I find it difficult to review a short film, because I just don’t think 20 minutes is enough to tell a tale that is striving for character development. The sneak peek I got into Metera’s life is enough to make you wonder what her background is, but you never find out. Because there wasn’t more development into that part of the story, the ending left me wondering how much better it could have been had the film stretched out just a tad longer to really clue you in to what is going on.

I’d like to see this turned into a feature because the premise is one of promise. It was an enjoyable watch, but definitely left me with a…void.

Best line of the movie: “Do you want me to crumple you up for good?”
