The Grindhouse team is at it again with their weekly event at The New Bev! Check it out this time…. from Brian Quinn…
Join us at the New Beverly Cinema this Tuesday, December 7th, as we pay tribute to special guest Alan Ormsby. For this event we’ll be screening two films from the early part of a career that has gone on to include writing credits for MY BODYGUARD, the remake of CAT PEOPLE, POPCORN, THE SUBSTITUTE, and Disney’s MULAN. We’ll be starting the evening with DERANGED, written and co-directed by Ormsby, which tells the story of grave robbing killer Ezra Cobb (based on Ed Gein) and features a strong performance by star Roberts Blossom.
We’ll be following this with DEATHDREAM, a modern take on the classic tale “The Monkey’s Paw” that is both a wonderfully creepy horror film and also one of the earliest commentaries on the Vietnam War and the plight of returning veterans trying to fit back in society. Directed by Bob Clark and written by Ormsby (who also did the makeup and effects with Tom Savini), this is one of our all-time favorite indie horror films and a true exploitation classic.
As an added bonus, there will be a Q&A between the films with Alan Ormsby. We’ll also be celebrating the birthday of Grindhouse Film Festival co-founder Eric Caidin on Tuesday, so come down for a night of grindhouse madness! The event starts at 7:30pm, and admission for the double-feature, raffle and reel of rare exploitation trailers is still only $8.00. You won’t find a bigger bang for your entertainment dollar during this economic meltdown.
