When Trash Attacks!

No, I’m not talking about the Kardashian sisters! I mean trash…litter. That’s the concept of a new horror short film by high schoolers. See, horror isn’t all blood and guts. It often contains real life lessons like don’t litter and don’t pick up the hitch hiker stranded on the side of the road. Coming in at just over a minute, Garbage Monsters touches on the environmental issue of pollution at the beach. So, obviously, as a beach bum in New Jersey, I HAD to post this. In the video, a woman throws away a lotion bottle on a dock and then heads to the beach. Once on the sand, she notices there is a lot more trash on the beach. As she’s getting herself situated to enjoy a day in the sun, the trash pieces combine to make some sort of figure made out of trash. Then it attacks the woman. It’s kind of cheesy, but pretty good for a high school production!

The video was created by Esteban Valencia, Eduardo Hernadez, and Randi Levy who attend Miami Beach Senior High in Florida. Believe it or not, the one minute trash monster video won an award for its underlying message about saving the environment. It won the first place award for their age category in the Oceans 2030: Youth Outlook Multimedia Contest. Another interesting point is that this film is shot in black and white, saying that “it captures the feel of the 1950s” because apparently all of our existing culture and products were available 60 years ago too. Cracking on Garbage Monsters for its lack of actuality is good all things considered for a short high school film. Everyone should give it a look. It’s short and has a good message.
