Red State Panned At Sundance

Reports are coming in that, despite one or two good reviews, Kevin Smith’s psychological horror film, Red State, is getting ripped apart by critics at the Sundance Film Festival. This is important to note because Red State was rejected from distributors and also rejected from the competition portion of Sundance. Red State is a film about three high school boys who answer an online gang bang add. However, instead of finding the attractive woman who was promised, they find a religious fanatic who kidnaps and tortures them. Apparently the themes present in this film are meant to take shots at religious fundamentalists and state officials.

There is opposition mostly from viewers who disagree with Kevin Smith’s political and religious views, but also because of the vulgarity and dirty humor. I’ve read reviews that remark on how many penis and fart jokes are in a “serious” film. The only good thing I’ve heard is that the writing, in certain parts, is really good and that the hate speech towards the end is really thought provoking for both sides of the debate present in Red State. The pastor who delivers the “sermon” is said to be really articulate and convincing.

I don’t know what to make of this. I don’t know if I should add it to my must see list or not. What about yall? Comment and let me know what you think.

Kevin Smith is going to self distribute the film starting in March and has a series of small theatre venues set up beginning in October.
