The Killing of Jacob Marr Promises New Breed of Characters

221 Films and Brad Rego bring you a new independent horror film titled The Killing of Jacob Marr. The Killing of Jacob Marr is the story of a boy who finds an object that has fallen from the sky. It warps his mind, and one night be butchers his parents before disappearing into the night. Many years later the house is opened as a get away cottage and five friends decide to take a little vacation from their mundane lives. Unfortunately for them, Jacob is back and not happy to see visitors in his childhood home.  It has been screened at multiple film festivals already, and is starting to rack up some awards, most notably for “Best Supporting Actor” in the Syracuse International Horror, Scifi and Fantasy Film Festival in 2010. If you would like to see this promising horror film, then you’re in luck! It is screening at the Foxboro Orpheum in Foxboro, Massachusetts on February 25, 2011.

There are two very interesting points that should interest horror fans. Firstly, The Killing of Jacob Marr was shot on a budget of roughly $15,500. I watched the trailer for the film on their official website and I am actually really impressed with their production values! The film looks very, very professional for being independent. The second point I wish to bring to your attention is that Mr. Rego, who also wrote the script, is promising to showcase a new breed of characters. I’m talking about real characters who do not fall into the usual stereotypes and clichés of the standard horror films we’re so used to.

When talking to the Taunton Daily Gazette, Rego was quoted as saying “[The Killing of Jacob Marr] stands out among modern horror movies because its characters are not stereotypes, but act authentically, gaining the viewer’s sympathy before they are brutally slaughtered. One of the things I really wanted to do was to make a horror movie that was not only smart, but was tension-driven and legitimately scary.”

Many other horror films have touted the same goal – intelligent, authentic characters – but few, if none at all, have actually delivered. So, I am rooting for this horror flick! The film is currently seeking distribution whether on DVD or Netflix. My interest in The Killing of Jacob Marr has been grabbed, so I’m also keeping my fingers crossed to be able to pop this in my DVD player one day. I’ll keep readers here up to date on the movie’s progress as news happens!
