I’m not really a Corey Feldman fan so I’m not sure, but does his voice really sound like that or was it just something he did for the character? I sincerely hope it’s the latter. Corey Haim was asked to return in this film, but passed on the opportunity. He promised to return for the next installment, but sadly passed away soon after. Clips from the first film were put into this movie, as Edgar’s (Feldman) memories, I think as a tribute to the late star. Another original cast member of the franchise, Jamison Newlander as Alan, returned to this film, although in a much smaller role. This is important because a lot of sequels now a days are dubbed sequels without any relation to the original film.
In Lost Boys 3: The Thirst, Edgar is facing eviction from his lot due to the fact that he has no money. Coincidentally, Gwen (played by Tanit Phoenix) seeks his help to save her brother who has been kidnapped by vampires. Gwen is a Twilight-esque writer who knows of Edgar’s fame as a vampire hunter. A master vampire is going to clubs and passing off vampire blood as drugs, which ultimately turns them into vampires. The pair team up with a reality star and his camera man, as well as Edgar’s love interest, to save the boy and stop the master vampire from creating a vampire army.
Showcased in this film is a new version of “Cry Little Sister,” a song that was made famous because of the first film’s cult following. I think the version by Nikki McKibbin is a better cover, in my opinion.
I think every aspect of this film is up to par with the previous two installments. Lost Boys 3: The Thirst doesn’t raise the bar, nor does it lower it. The acting is average. The script is average. The special affects are average. Although, the production (audio & lighting) is very professional. I’m just not wowed by this series like a lot of people seem to be. While Lost Boys 3: The Thirst wasn’t a completely waste of time, I don’t see myself popping it in the DVD player anytime soon.
I think the biggest problem here is that, as a horror fan, I’m used to some over the top stuff whether it be gore or suspense or whatever. There is nothing in this film that pops to me; nothing that I can say was extremely great. I almost got the feeling that they were making the film as they went along. Even the special features portion of the DVD was weird. Charisma Carpenter, who played Cordelia on Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel, hosts the special features even though she wasn’t even in the film at all. It was kind of cool to see her, but why?
I’m sure fans of the original film will enjoy this. So, I would encourage them to check it out. However, in my opinion, if you’re not into the horror styles of the late 2000s or psychological horror films, then I don’t think you’ll enjoy this. Just be forewarned! There is a twist ending that may leave you hating this film all together if you are unhappy with the crappy Twilight-verse.
