The Horrorfind Weekend Convention 2011

For over ten years, “The Horrorfind Weekend Convention” has been bringing in Horror and Movie Superstars for fans to meet, an awesome costume contest, “Scaryoke,” and other events. Last year, the bar was raised when they introduced “The Horrorfind Weekend Film Festival,” to run during the convention. To Program Director Joe Ripple, it just made sense.

“You have so many people coming to the convention, that we wanted to accomplish two goals with the film festival. We wanted to provide additional entertainment for our guests, and we wanted to showcase independent filmmakers by showing their work in a true theater style setting.”

Last year, the film festival offered thirty-one independent horror films, both a mixture of shorts and feature-length films. Ripple adds “We received a lot of positive feedback about the film festival. There are many fans who are simply tired of the remakes of the older horror films, and our film festival provides them with the opportunity to not only see new original ideas put on film, but also to interact with the filmmakers themselves.”

Films are judged on several factors, including plot, character development, acting, directing, special effects and other aspects of making a film. All in all, though, each work is viewed with the understanding of exactly how hard it is to make an independent film. “I’m looking for entertainment” Ripple states. “I watch each and every film submitted from opening to closing credits, because if I were submitting a film, I’d want the judging panel to give me the same exact consideration.”

Awards are given for the following categories; Best Film, Best Director; Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Screenplay; Best Special Effects, Best Cinematography and “Fan Favorite” – which is voted on by the audience members of the film festival.
