Weinstein’s Shelter to be Shelved

Looks like The Weinstein Company’s Shelter won’t be hitting theatres next Friday, but can you really blame them? Think about it. Have you seen any promotion for Shelter, whether on television or online? Why would they want to do a wide release for a film that no one knows about? Hopefully, they’re saving all their money in the bank to do promotion when Scream 4 hits theatres this April! While, obviously, I’m a big fan of horror films, I can understand this decision from a business prospective. Cut the losses and move on, right?

Shelter was a psychological horror film that was filmed in 2008 on a budget of $22,000,000. It stars Emmy Award winner Julianne Moore and Golden Globe winner Jonathan Meyers. The synopsis, taken from wikipedia, reads: A psychiatrist discovers that the multiple personalities of one of her patients are all murder victims. She tries to find out what happens, putting herself and her daughter in danger.” What? …and her daughter in danger? Great parenting skills at work here…

Shelter has already been released to foreign markets, including the UK in April of 2010 and Japan in March 2010. So, why was America skipped over? Not that a movie like this would seem that interesting to me, but I know there’s a huge market for horror fans who enjoy mystery-thriller type films. The announcement that Shelter had been shelved still seems like a good investment. Horror fans or other excited hopefuls can only hope for a limited theatre release or that this goes straight-to-DVD. No announcement has been made at this point whether or not it is shelved for good.
