I call it murmurs because I can’t officially call it chatter, yet, because there’s nothing really to chat about. When Scream 4 was announced, it was announced with the outright potential of a brand new trilogy. However, Scream 4 tanked at the domestic box office in America, bringing in about $38,000,000 to date. Fans have been left wondering what the fate of the franchise will be. Recently, Wes Craven said he will not be returning to film for the next coming months, having said he wants a “summer break” after doing two films, My Soul To Take and Scream 4, back to back. But, The Weinsten Company Chief, Harvey Weinsten, commented on the future of the franchise as of this moment to various media outlets:
“I’m sure director Wes Craven is going to do a sequel, I’m sure he’s going to do a sequel. Foreign sales are so strong that we’ll do over $100 million worldwide. It’s at $90 now, with about five or six major countries to go and a lot of small ones. We’ll probably do $110 million. I wish it would have been better domestically. But it’s not the worst thing in the world that’s ever happened. When I had my first conversation with screenwriter Kevin Williamson about this whole thing, he had an idea for a new trilogy. And I think that was Bob Weinstein’s thing also about waiting so long — if there were to be a ‘Scream 4,’ there would also probably be a ‘Scream 5‘ and a ‘Scream 6‘ sooner or later so we could construct a new trilogy that kind of stood on its own.”
David Arquette has already stated that he would portray Dewey again if there were to be more Screams. If Neve and Courtney were to opt out, there would be various ways to not include them in the script. Gail divorced Dewey, and Neve went into hiding again, for example. With the possibility of Scream 5 sometime in the future, I’m interested to see what HorrorSociety readers think. Yes or no to Scream 5?
