As I recall, Deception has been in the works for a while. I remember its initial announcement at least a year ago because most people figured it was all a hoax. The biggest source of doubt was based on the character names and their comparisons to Buffy The Vampire Slayer and Charmed cast and crew. For example, scream queen Leslie Easterbrook as Faith (Faith being Buffy’s rival Slayer), American Idol Alumni Kimberly Caldwell as Paige Matthews (The Charmed Ones long lost sister), and Sharon Whetstone as Grace Whedon (Joss Whedon being the creator of Buffy, Angel, Firefly, Tru Calling & Dollhouse). I should make it clear that the names are only the same; the character’s are completely different.
However, the rumors can be put to rest because Leslie Easterbrook has posted a video of herself on the official Deception website here confirming her role in the film. So, let’s dive right into the details of this indie horror film that is currently in preproduction. Let’s review the cast again, shall we? Deception will star Leslie Easterbrook (Devil’s Rejects), Bill Mosely (Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2), Ethan Erickson (“Percey” on Buffy The Vampire Slayer), Rosa Blasi (The Grudge), Ashley Laurence (Hellraiser franchise), Akeem Smith (Section 8), Kimberly Caldwell (Wrong Turn 2), and many others. Some of the cast differs based on the Facebook page, IMDB page, and the official site. But, if even half of the cast listed between the three sources show up in Deception, I’d be pretty happy.
Deception will be produced by Mojo Creative Group with Kevin Ciappetta as writer, Ruben Rodriguez as director, and Sharon Whetstone as producer.
I bet you’re wondering about the plot, right? Well, it’s long, but give it a read:
“On July 13, 1994, the small, coastal Florida town of Madera Verde was christened in blood. Olivia and Victor Mendoza were caught up in the midst of a bitter litigation process. The high-profile case was about to turn over in their favor when, on the night of the town’s Founders Day celebration, they were brutally murdered. The killer was never caught.
Over a decade later, Olivia and Victor’s now grown daughters have finally been able to heal after losing both their parents in such a horrific manner. All is going well for the sisters. Katrina, the youngest of the two, is engaged to be married to her very supportive Marine boyfriend, Greg Sanders. The sisters’ world comes crashing down around them when an elusive assassin begins a reign of terror: sadistically offing those closest to them one by one. To make matters worse, Katrina’s fiancé has gone missing and ends up becoming the prime suspect.
As the hours count down to the anniversary of their parents’ deaths, the sisters rally to unravel the twisted web of betrayal, before they, too, end up dead.”
It sounds like a cool mix of horror, mystery, and crime drama. Deception is currently seeking funding through Indiegogo.com. You can visit the page and donate (or spread the word) by clicking here. Also, make sure to like the film on Facebook here. Any film with Buffy references, a stellar cast, and a new concept to an old plot definitely gets my vote. Can’t wait to see if this film every comes to fruitation.
