Let’s see… How many times has Buffy returned from “the dead”? The movie in 1992 returned as a television show in 1997. The Master bit her and drowned her in season one. The Master snapped her neck in an alternate reality in season three. She jumped off a makeshift tower in season five. She was shot by Warren and died for a second in the ER in season six. Buffy returned to the world of media again in the form of comics in 2007. Buffy now has a remake in the works as well as the debut of season nine as comics this September.
Obviously, Buffy The Vampire Slayer has become one of the most influential and popular television shows around the world. It has appeared in the form of movies, television shows, and comic books for almost 20 years. Syndication of the iconic show still happens frequently on Fox, Oxygen, Logo, Nickelodeon and FX. However, much has happened since then. Buffy originally started as one girl in all the world who was chosen and given powers to fight vampires and all the other evil creatures who threaten Earth. As the show progressed, her gang of monster fighters grew as did their relationships; and season 7 culminated in a climatic final battle between The First Evil’s army of vampires and Buffy’s army of newly called potential’s turned Slayers.
In season 8, Buffy continued her role as leader to over 1,500 Slayers and any other magical or nonmagical being who joined them. Having spread cells throughout the world, Buffy was viewed as the leader of a terrorist organization by world governments. In an effort to stop the slaughter, Angel let himself be possessed by a being known as Twilight and they literally fucked a new reality into existence. This ended up creating a rift in dimensional boarders and unleashed Hell on earth…literally. To stop the destruction of man kind, Buffy smashed “the seed,” the creator of all magic, and sealed away the armies of demons trying to make it to Earth.
Now in season 9, Buffy will see a new role – a normal girl. Having smashed “the seed,” no more vampires can be sired, no more Slayers can be called, no more witches can perform magic, etc etc. So, Buffy relocates to San Fransisco with Dawn and Xander to start the normal life she has wanted all along. Still, Buffy serves as a waitress during the day and fights the remaining vampires at night. However, vampires aren’t the only ones who are unhappy with Buffy. The hundreds of girls who stood behind her, would have died for her, now feel betrayed…and some are coming for her. How will Buffy deal when the life she’s always wanted and the life she left behind collide?
Buffy Season 9 will also feature a side series called Faith & Angel. Sadly, while possessed by Twilight, Angel killed Giles in the same way that he killed Giles’ former lover, Jenny Calender. Overcome with grief for his actions, Faith & Angel will follow Faith as she almost rehabs Angel back to a valuable fighter and… oh yeah, the pair will seek to bring Giles back to life.
Faith & Angel’s first issue is currently on sale at comic book stores and online through Dark Horse, and Buffy Season 9 drops its first issue September 14, 2011.
