Q: How did Contrition begin?

Aaron Boltz: This began several years ago. Josh [Hodgins] and I, we actually went out and shot it. We basically used that as our test. So we went back and looked at the dialogue, looked at the action, looked at how we wanted to present the story; rewrote it, had the opportunity to get together with a lot of the industry people that are from Seattle, Yakima, and some people who came from out-of-town and put together a fantastic crew and fantastic cast; and brought together a presentation we were both happy with and are excited about.

Q: How did you prepare for the role of Derek?

Josh Hodgins: To prepare to play Derek, I met with a couple of realtors, kind of got into the mindset of what it’s like day-to-day for them. And I am happily married, so preparing to be a husband wasn’t that difficult. And a father – I have a daughter, and Derek has two daughters in the movie. As far as when he goes overboard later on, I don’t think you can prepare for that. I think you just have to put yourself there and try to believe it and try to make it as real as possible. Think: “How would you react in that moment?” and hope it translates well to the viewers and they agree with the way you are handling things as a character.

Q: How did years of industry experience help this production?

Aaron Boltz: With having done this for so many years and doing it in the industry and doing it indie, doing it lower budget than normal productions of this quality take – that’s where it really shines. Doing it for ten years in this area really helped with getting things that we needed such as locations, different things that really help us tell the story better.

Josh Hodgins: Knowing how to prepare the project, knowing where it was going, knowing how to get everything we need to make it sellable as a product.  As far as on set, the process, the long hours, getting prepped – a lot of people go out there on a 20 hour film day and waste their energy early. In my case I had to manage and maintain it the whole time; make sure I can give a performance in hour 20 just like how I want to.
