Definition: Foodie – noun – “A person that spends a keen amount of attention and energy on knowing the ingredients of food, the proper preparation of food, and finds great enjoyment in top-notch ingredients and exemplary preparation.
A foodie is not necessarily a food snob, only enjoying delicacies and/or food items difficult to obtain and/or expensive foods.” — Urban Dictionary
As far as I can remember, Foodie is the only horror film that revolves around food. So I give it props already for originality.
Foodie is a short, horror-comedy about a food service worker, Mueller, who is finally invited to a secret, high-class eatery called Kitchen X. His eagerness to experience the high cultured and underground kitchen soon turns to uneasiness and horror when things are…a bit out of the ordinary. Just wait until he sees what’s on the menu!
Foodie is written, produced, directed, and edited by Christopher G. Moore. Eryk Pruitt also served as writer and producer. Ismail Abdelkhalek also pitched in as a producer as well as the director of photography. Angela Pritchett handled all the special effects. This film stars Nick Karner, John Jimerson, Emlee Vassilos, Alena Koch, Meredith Sause, Tracey Coppedge, and others.
I think, for me, the scariest thing about Foodie is the reality that there are really people out there who are so snooty and bitchy about food. You know “high-class” people who are way to into fashion and “culture” and how you just want to punch them in the face? Well, foodie’s are the same thing except they rant and rave about food…and you still want to punch them in the face. But, talking about the startlingly realistic attitudes and dialogue here leads me to talk about the script more in-depth for a second. There were two moments where I was like, “…..*looks around*….,” but besides those two little blips, the script was (and I don’t say this often) near flawless. Believable. Able to be articulated. Fun and annoying.
All of the actors in this picture delivered stellar performances. Although, respectfully, Mr. Karner needs a little bit more work before he tackles a lead like “Mueller” again. I actually think my favorite character was “Darla,” mostly because everyone seems to hate her. Also the way she pushes her blog every five seconds reminds me of myself trying to push Horror Society every five seconds. Least favorite character? Probably “Beth,” not because of the acting or anything, but because her whole character in general was so annoying. I wish that Angela Pritchett had the opportunity to act in Foodie, but her special effects work here are professional and amazing. My favorite was… well, I won’t spoil that for everyone but it has to do with an eyeball.
Foodie is cohesively one of the best short films I’ve seen in a while. In just under a half hour this flick was able to pull off what some films can’t pull off in an hour and a half. Great production, great directing, great writing, great acting, great effects…and a couple interesting plot twists I did NOT see coming. Oh, and it did have a couple of funny moments. I mean what more could you ask for? If you have the chance to see Foodie, take it! I promise you… You will eat it all up! …I can’t believe I just said that.
