Frank Darabont Plans to Bring ‘Godzilla’ Back to his origins

Frank Darabont imageThere’s been a lot of trouble lately in the Godzilla reboot camp with all the legal battles involving producers allegedly being fired, breach of contract allegations and who knows what else.  Legendary Pictures has brought Frank Darabont (The Walking Dead, The Mist, The Green Mile) in to make some changes and rewrite the script.   Hopefully all the legal woes won’t bog down the production which is scheduled to start shooting in March of this year for a planned May 16th, 2014 release date.

iO9 talked with Frank Darabont about his plans for Godzilla, and had this to say…

“What I found very interesting about Godzilla is that he started off definitely as a metaphor for Hiroshima and Nagasaki. And some of the atom bomb testing we were doing in the South Pacific in the subsequent years. The giant terrifying force of nature that comes and stomps the shit out of your city, that was Godzilla.

What we’re trying to do with the new movie is not have it camp, not have it be campy. We’re kind of taking a cool new look at it. But with a lot of tradition in the first film. We want this to be a terrifying force of nature.”

I love Frank Darabont and his past work, I truly believe that if anyone can give us a return to the dark Godzilla of the original film, it’s  him.

We’ll continue covering Godzilla news as it comes in.
