I love randomly finding movies while out shopping around.  Sure, when you want a specific film you may order it or make a special trip out to buy it but there is just something different about going out on a hunt not knowing what you will find. I hit the nearest FYE and came across a four film set containing this, two other films, and an indie horror documentary.  I had heard about this film recently and decided to grab it.

While searching amazon.com for S.O.V. horror I found The Basement VHS big box set containing The Basement on VHS and DVD with some other films.  In the “people also purchased” section I found this film by itself for well over $10.  I didn’t know anything about the film so I did not order it and my patience paid off.  I got this four film set for $2.99.

**Spoiler Alert**The film follows two thieves as they attempt to retrieve some loot they buried at the local high school. The two are unable to dig it up but accidentally hit a line carrying toxic waste and unleash it into the school’s drinking water.  Those that drink the water unknowingly turn in to blue skinned fiends that crave human flesh.**Spoiler Alert**

I didn’t expect much from this film.  Every DVD, VHS, and poster artwork I saw for this film looked absolutely silly.  The artwork made the film look extremely cheap and horrible, however, my love for shitty films knows no bounds and I wanted to see it.  Lucky for me the cover art is deceiving and the film was actually very decent.  In fact, I actually enjoyed it.  Sure, it was filled with campy moments and cheese but I like that kinda stuff.

The acting is actually pretty bad.  The only cast members that I did not feel sorry for was the two guys that played the criminals.  I played around on imdb and discovered that a majority of them did not have a lot of experience in front of the camera before this.

The story is nothing that original or thought provoking but it does offer some simple entertainment.  This is a movie made for those that really enjoy S.O.V. horror but it can transcend to other horror fans as well.  Finally we do get some fairly decent on screen deaths and above average special effects.  The kills look good and so does the blood and gore.  Overall, this is an overlooked S.O.V. film that offers some great kills and even better gore.  I highly recommend it.
