You can count the number of killer bunny movies on one hand (Night of the Lepus, Donnie Darko), andBeaster Day image 7 I’m not talking some guy dressed up in a bunny suit going around killing people, I’m talking an actual bunny rabbit doing the killing. Now you can add one more to that list with Beaster Day: Here Comes Peter CottonHell from writing and directing team of the Snygg Brothers. This duo have affectionately created a film that’s about as over-the-top with killer rabbit carnage and B-movie hijinks as one is likely to find these days. Beaster Day is poised to become the greatest Easter horror film ever released.

It’s Easter time in a sleep little hamlet in rural America and the townsfolk are preparing for the annual Easter parade and festivities that draws visitors in from miles around. Locals begin to go missing one after the other. Something is chewing up the town’s residents and leaving grisly remains. As it turns out, a giant, mutant 50 foot Easter bunny with a taste for human flesh is behind the rash of killings. This killer bunny not only has a taste for human flesh, but prefers prey of the topless variety.

Beaster Day image 2As the bodies pile up, the town’s mayor (John Paul Fedele) has to downplay the deaths or risk losing tons of revenue from the Easter festivities. When reports of the giant killer Easter bunny start rolling in, the mayor concocts a cover story for the press and locals about the deaths being caused by defective electric power tools. The only hope to save the town from the Easter bunny from Hell is from an eccentric dog catcher Doug (Peter Sullivan) and slacker Brenda (Marisol Custodio). Together, the two inept and unlikely heroes must save the town and Easter holiday before any more naked models have to die.

Okay, if you haven’t figured it out already and are looking for a serious horror film with top-notch acting, special makeup effects and storyline, then look somewhere else because this film doesn’t have any of that. What it does have is a 50 foot killer Easter bunny rod puppet superimposed against normal backgrounds for scale that would have the likes of Ray Harryhausen and Willis O’Brien turning over in their graves. It also has a bevy of busty babes getting decapitated, squashed and generally dismembered in outrageous and hilarious ways.

Everything about Beaster Day is bad, but it’s supposed to be and that’s the fun of it. This film mostBeaster Day image 3 definitely falls into the category of being so intentionally bad that it’s awesome. This film reminds me of something you would see on Syfy except that it’s actually good and could never play on that channel due to all the excessive gore and nudity.

I have to give credit to writers and directors, The Snygg brothers for making a film like this. It’s not going to win them any awards but I’m sure they wanted to make a fun film and accomplished that for sure. It’s hard to get into critiquing the details of a film like this with everything being played for laughs. The acting is not the best, but again that’s the point. Highlights have to go to John Paul Fedele for playing the corrupt, hippy mayor who’s great in the role. Everyone else does a great job at playing stupid.

What can you say that’s negative about a film where everything is intentionally bad? Nothing really, so I’ll leave it at that.

Beaster Day: Here Comes Peter CottonHell will definitely go onto my yearly Easter horror film must-watch list and after you get a chance to see this magnum opus of B-movie mockery, you’ll feel the same. While this film may not be for all tastes, it was a loving homage to bad B-films by a couple of guys who understand the genre and have a wonderful affection for killer Easter bunnies.
