Ghostly Image Captured at Hotel That Inspired ‘The Shining!’

stanleyhotel Maybe Stephen King was up to something after all…

On Tuesday, April 12th, Houston native Henry Yau uploaded a photo to his personal Instagram (@ares415) that appears to show a ghostly image standing atop a grand staircase at The Stanley Hotel in Colorado, the real-life establishment that helped to inspire Stephen King’s 1977 novel The Shining. The picture has since gone viral, with many people claiming to see TWO figures in the photo: a woman in early Victorian clothing standing by the stairs, and a child standing beside her. Yau has claimed there was no one on the staircase when the photo was taken.

This isn’t the first time ghostly activity has been reported at The Stanley Hotel. Its official website says that apparitions and other paranormal occurrences started as early as 1917 and many psychics have called the location an active haunt; with the original owners who built the hotel being credited as the phantoms who walk the halls at night.

The Stanley Hotel is not to be confused with The Timberline Lodge, another real-life establishment located in Oregon. The Timberline Lodge was used as the set of the 1980’s psychological thriller The Shining, which was adapted from King’s book to film by Stanley Kubrick and Diane Johnson. The film stars Jack Nicholson, Shelley Duvall, Danny Lloyd and Scatman Crothers. It has since become one of the most beloved horror films of all time, a box office success and appears on frequent “top lists” on a yearly basis.

What do you guys think? Ghost, curtain, trick of the eye or something else?
