My Bloody Valentine (1981)

A decades old folk tale surrounding a deranged murderer killing those who celebrate Valentine‘s Day, turns out to be true to legend when a group defies the killer‘s order and people star turning up dead.

Two miners in full gear, including face mask are seen going deep into a mine shaft. When they reach an alcove, one remove their mask revealing herself. Th other miner stays in his gear even as the woman precedes to fondle the mask an breathing tubes. Finally the miner (we presume it‘s a man) grabs the woman violently and slams her against a pick axe.

We shift scenes to the small town of Valentine Bluff. The town‘s people are preparing for a Valentine‘s dance. This small town ha one industry…coal mining and many of the men are employees of the company owning the mine.

We see Hanniger, the mayor, talking with Mabel, who owns a laundromat. The mayor makes a vague reference to a past tragedy associated with Valentine‘s Day, and also learns this is the first dance to be held in 20 years.

It was about twenty years ago that there was a terrible mining accident that trapped five menunderground. The accident was due to  the negligence of two supervisors who were anxious to get to a dance. Of the five men who were trapped, only one, Harry Warden, survived the ordeal, but the rescue took so long that by the time Harry was rescued, he had resorted to cannibalism; eating the bodies of his dead coworkers.

Harry eventually took revenge on the two supervisors – attacking them with a pick axe, tearing out their hearts, and leaving them in decorative Valentine boxes with a warning to the town to never hold another Valentine‘s dance. The warning had been heeded until now, and the town tries to put the past behind it by having another dance,

My Bloody Valentine from 1981 stars Paul Kelman, Lori Hollier, Neil Affleck and Keith Knight.

My Bloody Valentine came on the heels of Halloween and Friday the 13th. But My Bloody Valentine is not Halloween or Friday the 13th. This is a movie, a classic – yes…but a movie that took some of the best elements from Halloween and tried to duplicate them.

My Bloody Valentine is 1hr30mins long but it seemed a lot longer. Most of the intense action happens in the last twenty minutes…much like Halloween. But unlike Halloween, this movie doesn‘t have the creepy element nor a great musical score to help it out.

Still, being a classic, I‘m giving My Bloody Valentine from 1981 4 out of 5 bloody stumps. You gotta honor the classics.
