Favorite Fourth of July Horror Films

Original Posting: July 2, 2012
Updated: July 3, 2015 – added titles to the bottom that take place on or around the Fourth of July so you guys can have more of a selection!

Happy Fourth of July, everyone! In celebration of America’s birthday, I have compiled a list of horror films that have taken place during the Fourth of July. I’m sure I’m forgetting some, so hit up the Horror Society Facebook page. Tell me, what are some of your favorites and what are others that I missed on my list?

1. I Know What You Did Last Summer – You guys like…remember that time we hit that guy with our car and dumped him in the ocean? I Know I’ll get a lot of flack for saying I Know is my favorite Fourth of July horror film, but I’m just a big sucker for slasher flicks…and Sarah Michelle Gellar…Don’t forget this film’s sequel, I Still Know What You Did Last Summer, either.

2. Jaws – Yesterday, I was doing some night swimming in the ocean just fifteen minutes from where the story behind the plot of Jaws took place. Being that Jaws happens before and during the Fourth of July I thought “Well, wouldn’t it be ironic if I got eaten by a shark right now?” Jaws is truly a classic. But with all the recent shark attacks in the Carolinas in June 2015, this may hit a little too close to home for some!

3. Independence Day – Ok, I know Independence Day is not a horror film, but it’s definitely science-fiction and those usually go together hand in hand. While the aliens here are far from horrific, any Will Smith movie usually is… Plus, who could forget the HOO-RAH AMERICA!!! speech from the President before the big sky battle? A sequel is due out this time in 2016, but something tells me it won’t be nearly as original and iconic as this man vs. alien blockbuster.

4. Uncle Sam – I’ve only seen bits and pieces of this, but Uncle Sam is about a Desert Storm vet who returns from the dead to kill unpatriotic Americans on a Fourth of July weekend. It’s currently available on Amazon Instant Video. I think I know what I’ll be doing after work tonight… Uncle Sam is coming for you…

5. Cape Fear – Also, not a true horror movie, but maybe a suspense-thriller. Definitely has its “What the Fuck?” moments? Not much to say here, except that I really hate the daughter in Cape Fear, like violently hate her…

Other Films to Add to the List: Frogs (1972), Aquanoids (2003), Jersey Shore Shark Attack (2012), You Are Not Alone (2014)
