…Imagine and Reputation are everything.
Dark Worlds is an anthology with interconnecting short films, much in the same vein as Trick R Treat and Creepshow. The screenplay is actually the adapted version of the novel Dark Worlds: Project 31 which is written by Zack Daggy. Together with Five By Five Productions, Darkrider Studios, and director Chris Jay, Daggy has helped to bring his novel to life…at least for this segment. Slasher is just what the title implies, a short slasher film.
“William Rosum is a bit of a celebrity. He’s in the papers all the time. He’s the talk of the town Everyone is dying to know where he’ll be, what he’ll do and most of all… Who he’ll kill. After 55 slayings in 5 years, William has earned a reputation as the Careview Slasher, but as he will soon learn, sometimes the price of fame can be deadly.”
Slasher stars Katharine Nash, Beau Yotty, Brett Hays, Dax Spanogle, Kitsie Duncan, and Michelle Shields. Crew members include Chris Jay as director and editor, Kitsie Duncan and Chris Jay as producers, Derrick Clark as director of photography, and music by Ottis Cate.
I think the biggest point I can make about Dark Worlds: Slasher is that it is very reminiscent of Behind The Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon. Not only do the lead actors look the same, but the story is told from the killer’s point of view. Although, Slasher has it as a voice-over instead of actual commentary. Viewers get to hear the killer’s thoughts about his victims and why he does what he does. In this case, part of the killer’s motives is that he believes the world to be a depressing place and anyone who smiles is a liar and a cheat. So, anyone who likes the underground hit Behind The Mask will definitely get enjoyment out of Dark Worlds: Slasher.
The second biggest point I can make has to do with the twist midway through the film. As our Slasher enters the unlocked house and our female victim is in the shower I thought, “Oh, I know where this is going.” and truth me told, I was right! However, it was a twist within a twist and I wasn’t expecting what followed the initial plot changing device. Major props to Zack Daggy for writing the inventive, creative script. While the film as a whole production is amazing, the script really was the best, most driving force. With an amazing script, the production had nothing but magic to work with and both parties delivered.
Dark Worlds: Slasher is just one segment in a series. If the other segments are anything similar to what I watched here, I can’t wait to see what is in store for horror fans. It could turn out to be a really great horror anthology. Oh, and this title is available on DVD through Darkrider Studios’ website. Go get it!
