‘The Purge’ Sequel In the Works

The Purge image

The Universal studios horror film The Purge just opened this past weekend to big money and a number one spot at the box office.  The Purge pulled in $34 million on its opening weekend and was produced for only $3 million, so we all know what that means…sequel talk, and it didn’t take long.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, producer Jason Blum (Paranormal Activity, Insidious, Dark Skies) and Universal have announced they’re throwing a sequel into development.

The movie’s world is rife for continued exploration as the story is set in a society where once a year, there’s a 12-hour period when all crime is allowed and condoned.

It is unclear whether James DeMonaco, who wrote and directed Purge, will be back in the same capacity.

Plot Synopsis

In an America wracked by crime, the government has sanctioned an annual 12-hour period in which any and all criminal activity—including murder—is legal. The police can’t be called. Hospitals suspend help. It is one night when the citizenry regulates itself without thought of punishment. On this night plagued by violence and an epidemic of crime, one family wrestles with the decision of who they will become when a stranger comes knocking.

More on this as it comes in.
