The Walking Dead Season 1: A Telltale Games Series (Review)

This is not the show, and in my opinion this game is just so much better than that. We do run into some characters from the show however they are very small rolls. We of course start off as a criminal (LEE Everett) cause lets just not do the cop thing. But fuck do we get a break. On our way to jail the zombie apocalypse happens to kick off. Life takes a turn and we find ourselves with a new focus. That is to protect a girl named Clementine.

This is a very different type of game, its a point and click. A huge chunk of it is just dialog and decisions we have to make to survive. We are put in some really messed up situations and you don’t really have time to think, its more we have to react. There are consequences for every action regardless if its right or wrong. The beauty of this game is that you get to choose where the story is going. You and I playing have the same goal, however we can react differently and that will change the dynamic of the characters relationships. The game is split up into five episodes and if you played while it came out you were definitely on the edge of your seat. Waiting for the next one to come out was intense, we did have to wait a month or two for the next episode to downloading. This being a story mode game it was really well executed.

You run into this little girl Clementine, and you end up wanting to help her get to her parents. If the relationship wasn’t here between these two characters this story would blow. She effects how you play the game and the mind set you put yourself into when dealing with certain situations because in the back of your mind your like fuck how is this going to effect Clem. Sometimes it will pop up Clementine will remember that and you just think shit did I scar this girl for life you know, or was it a tough call that had to be made.  Lives literally are not only effected but from our actions could be ended. Its important to really chose wisely cause when it counts you need to know who will have your back and that is based on how they see you.  This game showed that relationships, story and characters can really be the core of a very evolved and engaging game. It feels more like an interactive TV show than it does a game.

Unfortunately the only thing that stops this came from being a perfect jewel is some technical glitches. During intense action scenes it tends to freeze and by the time it catches up you could possibly have died. Scenes do often freeze, especially when the following one is trying to load. Loading or saving is a bit of a long wait and sometimes saved files disappear. The good thing is these technical glitches are the only cons I have for this game. Regardless of these the game is still worth playing through. The narrative style makes this game so memorable. You finish with some regrets, you made some mistakes and thats just life. It is an emotionally roller coaster and never fails to keep you locked in.
