Sources confirmed earlier this evening that the oldest living Oscar winner for Best Supporting Actor, George Kennedy, has passed away at the age of 91. Reports state that the actor had been in declining health since the death of his wife one year prior, and that Mr. Kennedy had been admitted to hospice a month ago to deal with a long lasting heart condition, which is believed to have been the cause of his death. What’s sad about this news is that the late legend could have been alive and well had it not been for these two unfortunate circumstances; but boy, what a life to have lived!
George Kennedy is perhaps most known for his roles in movies like Cool Hand Luke (1967) and Airport (1970) as well as for playing the role of Carter McKay in 74 episodes of “Dallas” between 1988 and 1991. He also appeared as Ed Hocken in The Naked Gun (1988), The Naked Gun 2 (1991) and The Naked Gun 3 (1994).
During his 183 credit, six decade career in film and television, Kennedy managed to rack up a respectable amount of horror film roles, primarily in 1980 and 1988. These many roles can be found in The Boston Strangler (1968), Death Ship (1980), Day of Resurrection (1980), Just Before Dawn (1981), Radioactive Dreams (1985), Creepshow 2 (1987), Demonwarp (1988), Death Street USA (1988), Uninvited (1988), The Terror Within (1989), Brain Dead (1990), Bayou Ghost (1997), Monster Makers (2003) and The Devil’s Due at Midnight (2004).
All of us here at HorrorSociety.com send our condolences to his family, friends and fans.
