We’ve been waiting for news like this for a long time, right?
Horror-comedy fans have been craving a continuation of 2009’s Zombieland ever since the underdog became a massive success by breaking records, making back 3x its production budget and winning the hearts of theater-goers everywhere. When it comes to the budding franchise, the problem has always been getting the next production going. Writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick have been working on the screenplay for Zombieland 2 since 2010, but Sony dragged their feet on the project and ended up shelving the idea. Fast forward to 2013 and CBS was interested in production a television series, but that never came to fruition either. The TV show idea was adapted to an Amazon exclusive, but, once again, that didn’t work out. And that was where things came to a close for the next three years.
Now, in 2016, we have some great news! It looks like a sequel to Zombieland is actually in development because the logo for the film made its debut at CinemaCon this weekend. It’s featured at the top of this post, actually. With the release of the logo for Zombieland 2 also comes some information on the hopefully upcoming film. First, Reese and Wernick are still in charge of penning the screen play, but it’s being reported that they’ll be helped in this endeavor by Godzilla‘s Dave Callaham. Also, sources are saying that Ruben Fleischer will return as director, which means all of the same flavors are back to make this project feel like an official continuation in the series.
There’s been no announcement yet regarding Woody Harrelson, Emma Stone, Abigail Breslin, Amber Heard and Jesse Eisenberg and if any of their characters will return for Zombieland 2.
Come on, Sony! Make it happen!
