“Scream: The TV Series,” Episode 2.09 – The Orphanage
[WARNING: ALL MAJOR EPISODE SPOILERS TO FOLLOW]

Intro: Emma is being followed through her house by Audrey, Noah and Kieran. They keep shouting at her that all they want to do is talk and see if she’s ok. It goes on until she gets fed up in the kitchen and stabs them all to death. It is revealed to be another dream sequence, with Emma having slept walked to the kitchen and being pulled from the trance by Maggie. The next morning Emma is telling Kieran about the nightmare and she tells him she’s been having them for a while, which is news to anyone watching the show. After all that’s happened, Kieran doesn’t blame her for having troubles with her sleep. Emma thinks that the nightmare was caused by her apprehension to seeing Audrey at school later. The general consensus is that no one wants to see her and everyone blames her. At the same time, Audrey is looking over pictures of herself, Emma and her dead girlfriend, Rachel, and feeling the blame.

The Mornings Are Always So Interesting in Lakewood: Sheriff Acosta wakes to find that Gustavo never came home that night, because he was with Brooke. He calls his son, but he doesn’t answer. Gustavo awakes in bed with Brooke and it’s clear that they had drunken sex together. Brooke jokingly calls him creepy and they start to make out, but Brooke stops him saying she doesn’t want to move on from Jake until she finds out who killed him. Brooke kicks him out, jokingly, and goes to take a shower, leaving Gustavo to steal a tube of her lipstick. When Brooke gets to school, Emma tells her about Audrey bringing Piper to Lakewood and Brooke is just as shocked as everyone else. Hayley is there and makes an obnoxious comment and leaves. Emma starts laying into Noah about knowing Audrey’s secret and not telling them, still feeling betrayed by him, too, even though he was waiting for Audrey to tell the truth. The argument is broken up by Audrey’s arrival, which causes Emma to run off. Audrey gives chase and promises she didn’t know Piper was really the killer, which enrages Emma to the point that she hits her former best friend in front of the whole school.

Fun’s Not Over Yet: Kieran whisks her away from the eyes of her peers and Emma goes to put her things in her locker. When she opens it, she finds a strand of someone’s hair wrapped around a cassette tape that says “PLAY ME.” It’s written in lipstick, in an attempt to make viewers think Gustavo is the killer. As Emma and Kieran depart, Audrey and Noah go into a classroom to talk about the revelation that Audrey brought Piper to Lakewood. Audrey thinks that Noah sent the .mp3 to Emma, feeling betrayed because Noah recorded her without her knowledge. Audrey then thinks Zoe sent the .mp3 since she was the only other one in his bedroom. Their talk is broken up by a teacher. At home, Emma doesn’t want to play the tape because she knows it has something bad on it. She and Kieran listen to it anyway, because everyone still has a cassette player on hand now adays, and it’s one of Karen Lang’s audio recordings. It’s very clear she’s been following Emma and is obsessed with her, though she does call Emma violent and delusional. She thinks Karen Lang is right, but Kieran assures her that Karen’s just crazy.

Prove Me Wrong: In Noah’s room, he and Audrey are trying to get to the bottom of who broke into his computer to send the .mp3. The conversation takes a turn when Zoe walks in. The two women really hate each other. Audrey accuses Zoe of playing dumb and says she sent the .mp3 to try and drive a wedge between her and Noah. Zoe admits that she did send the .mp3 to herself, but she never sent it to anyone. She just wanted to listen to an unreleased part of Noah’s podcast, which she is obsessed with. Meanwhile, Emma and Kieran go to visit Karen Lang in the hospital to hopefully get answers as to why she was secretly recording Emma. When Karen sees Emma, though, she goes into hysterics and the teens are ushered out of the room. As they’re leaving, a bundle of daises arrives for Karen, which strikes Emma as odd because that was Brandon James’ nickname for her mother. When Kieran swipes the card from the flowers, it says that the flowers were sent from Piper Shaw. It’s obvious that someone is fucking with them.

Filler Filler: Maggie visits Sheriff Acosta and confirms that Eddy is the second dead body found in the burnt down house. Sheriff Acosta brushes the revelation under the table by talking about Gustavo. He tells Maggie that a few years ago Gustavo and his friend were playing with a gun and Gustavo accidentally shot his friend in the face. Gustavo called it into the police, but only hours after the fact and only after he was done drawing the dead body. He also shows Maggie the drawings Gustavo has done for his graphic novel, the ones that include The Lakewood Six and victims of this year’s attacks. All this weird stuff and Sheriff Acosta still can’t lock his office door because Gustavo breaks in and goes through the current files of the happenings in Lakewood, taking screen shots of several things.

Not Suspicious At All: Audrey is still skeptical of Zoe, not believing the story that Zoe only sent the .mp3 to herself and that someone must have stolen it from her after that. When Noah sticks up for Zoe, he and Audrey get into a big fight and Audrey storms out. Zoe is super impressed that Noah stood up for her and they finally have sex. Kieran sneaks back into Karen’s hospital room and swipes the keys to her house. They break in and start looking for things until Emma notices an upside down picture hanging on the wall. It’s a year book photo from elementary school and has a young Karen Lang seated beside a young Piper Shaw. When Emma realizes Karen and Piper were friends, she calls Noah. Noah, being the criminal expert that he is, knows that the elementary school once doubled as an insane asylum for youths… meaning Karen and Piper grew up together in the same loony bin. Noah fears that Zoe is a target now that the .mp3 was released, but no one really cares because this is bigger news. Meanwhile, Gustavo shows Brooke evidence from his dad’s office that Brooke’s father hired Jake to burn down the failed housing complex the night that he died. Brooke blames her father for Jake’s death and finds it suspicious he never told the cops about it.

Action: Emma, Kieran and Noah head to the insane asylum… and are shocked to see a party going on there… with everyone wearing half Brandon James masks. Yeah! Audrey isn’t there, but she gets a phone call from Ghostface, who tells her that she needs to hurry to the party before he kills Noah. Emma sees Hayley at the party and confronts her, knowing she set the whole thing up. Hayley is happy that the party got under her skin so much and says she couldn’t have done it without her “special friend.” The Lakewood Six… erm… Lakewood Five… plan to shut off the electricity and call the police to end the party before the killer has a chance to attack, with Noah having told all of them this is what happens with several movie references. Audrey shows up and warns them that Noah is the next target, but they split up anyway to look for answers. Hayley goes to a back room to put some supplies away and Ghostface comes out. Hayley thinks it’s her boyfriend playing a joke and tries to give him a blowjob. However, it’s the real Ghostface and he stabs her several times.

End: Emma and Audrey follow a trail of Piper Shaw photos to a bedroom and are shocked to see a girl sitting in a rocking chair. When they approach, they discover it’s the dead body of Piper Shaw, thus eliminating the possibility that she survived last year’s gunshot and returned to kill again. The cops bust in and end the party, too late of course, and discover Hayley’s dead body. Brooke is now staying in a hotel room, not wanting to be with her father, and Gustavo comes to visit her. They start talking about their weird relationship… with Gustavo calling them “special friends.”
