Loosely based on the famous Mayerling Incident, the film is set in a Central European kingdom towards the end of the 19th century. Bored by his very proper wife, the youthful heir to the throne spends his time in amorous dalliances on his sprawling country estate, which operates like a kind of proto hippy commune.

A mysterious Circus of Truth arrives, the champagne is spiked with drugs, and the party turns into a wild, naked orgy that culminates in death and tragedy. Much misunderstood and widely banned, the film caused a sensation when it screened at the Cannes film festival in 1976. Today, this overlooked masterpiece of European art cinema can finally be appreciated as one of the most original films of its era. There really is nothing else like it in world cinema. This first Blu Ray edition, uncut and restored from the original negative, comes with a host of exclusive special features.

Special Features:

Interview with film historian Michael Brooke
Interview with cast member Pamela Villoresi
Interview with writer Giovanna Gagliardo

Review Quotes:

An extraordinary multi-sexual erotic rhapsody – Tony Rayns, Time Out

Private Vices Public Virtues will definitely push a few viewers’ buttons but it’s a well-made and thought provoking film… features some gorgeous cinematography, brazen performances and a great score. Mondo Macabro brings the film to Blu-ray for the first time in grand fashion with a beautiful presentation and some fascinating supplemental material. Ian Jane – Rock! Shock! Pop!

The very fine line between art films and erotica (if such a line even exists) has rarely been blurred as ecstatically as in this delirious, fleshy, underrated masterpiece… a brave, audacious release that deserves to pop up on several of this year’s Top 10 lists. Nathaniel Thompson – Mondo Digital

Night Has A Thousand Desires
Blu-ray
Label: Mondo Macabro

Prebook: 10/11/2016 Street: 11/08/2016
SRP: $24.95 UPC: 843276016890 Cat: MDO168
Color 94 minutes In Spanish with English subtitles
Widescreen Anamorphic 2.35:1 PCM Mono All Regions
Production year: 1984 Horror Not Rated
Director: Jess Franco
Cast: Lina Romay, Daniel Katz, Carmen Carrion, Albino Graziani, Jose Llamas, Alicia Principe

In this surreal and sensuous mystery/noir, Lina Romay (The Female Vampire, Lorna the Exorcist) plays Irina, a partner in a male-female mind reading act. At night she experiences vivid and sexually charged dreams which end in murder. It seems that the people whose minds she reads are being killed off one by one.

In the 1980s, after the death of the Spanish dictator, Jess Franco returned to his native country and made a series of films in which he was given almost total freedom, so long as they featured a number of erotic sequences. Night Has a Thousand Desires is one of the most artistically successful of these films. It’s filled with familiar Franco touches – artful cinematography, atmospheric locations, naked women, an avant garde soundtrack – and it features one of Lina Romay’s most committed performances.

This world Blu Ray premier includes a number of exclusive extra features.

Special Features:

  • Brand new HD transfer from original negative
  • Interview with writer Stephen Thrower
  • Eurotika! A documentary on Jess Franco
  • Newly created optional subtitles
  • Mondo Macabro previews
