A year ago I distinctly remember watching Cruel Summer with tears streaming down my face. While not a true horror film, void of slashers and ghosts and everything in between, Cruel Summer scares you with a villain we all know, a villain we’ve all encountered – the dark side of human nature. This film, written and directed by Phillip Escott and Craig Newman, is going to shock and disturb you with its showing of vile human beings and the violence they’re capable of committing on each other.
Cruel Summer is not for the weak of heart. In my review I call it “emotionally draining,” “gut wrenching yet educational,” “heinous and barbaric,” “strangling with suspense” and “crushing and crippling.” You see, the plot follows three lowlifes as they stalk and attempt to murder a special needs teenager in the woods who they believe made a move on one of their group members. It’s as sad and as horrifying as you can imagine and it stars Richard Pawulski, Danny Miller, Natalie Martins, Reece Douglas, Grace Dixon, Gary Knowles, Sabrina Dickens and Thomas Conning.
