David DeCoteau’s got a new movie coming out in 2017 and once again the cult director is going to get some of my money. Mr. DeCoteau is a near iconic writer, producer, director and cinematographer, but he’s sort of a double edged sword. He’s most known for horror hits like Creepozoids, Sorority Babes in the Slimeball Bowl-O Rama, Puppet Master III: Toulon’s Revenge and The Killer Eye. In recent years, though, he’s shifted his attention to spew out film after film that caters to gay men while cleverly disguising them as horror movies. I’m talking about movies like Voodoo Academy and the 1313 series, all of which feature attractive men walking around in their tighty-whities for 75% of the movie. Still, I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention that his most recent work – Bigfoot vs. D.B. Cooper and Sorority Slaughterhouse – weren’t that bad.
And that’s why I’m willing to give his upcoming flick, Swamp Freak, a chance. At least as far as a VOD stream goes. I’m a sucker for campy creature features and the promotional cover art above is pretty cool, so I’m willing to give Swamp Freak a look-see as long as DeCoteau gives horror a good faith effort once again. And, if there’s a shirtless man or two, I won’t complain either. Only probably is no one is sure who the supposed shirtless men could be considering details about this upcoming movie are being kept under wraps despite Rapid Heart Pictures announcing it would get a worldwide release in Spring of 2017.
What I can tell you, however, is that three well-known scream queens will appear in Swamp Freak. These three women are none other than Helene Udy (My Bloody Valentine), Felissa Rose (Sleepawamp Camp) and Lesleh Donaldson (Happy Birthday to Me). Again, this is another reason why I want to see Swamp Freak. Who can deny the unbelievable talents of these women? DeCoteau claims that he was always a fan of bayou swamp monsters, so let’s hope that this all culminates in one fantastic creature feature that he can be proud of and one that horror fans can enjoy. Fingers crossed!
