As confirmed by Bloody Disgusting and Entertainment Weekly, the seventh film in the Child’s Play franchise has officially been announced. Not only that, but principal photography is already slated to kick off on January 9, 2017 in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. This is a huge sigh of relief for horror fans and fans of the killer doll after the last installment, Curse of Chucky, saw a lackluster straight-to-DVD release in 2013. Though Curse of Chucky was more impressive than previous entries like Bride of Chucky and Seed of Chucky, I’ve been a tad bit worried that things wouldn’t continue despite creator Don Mancini dropping update bombs on Twitter over the last year.
Speaking of Don Mancini, he will once again write and direct on Cult of Chucky and that’s why we can count on it to be canon to the series. Cult of Chucky is actually turning out to be quite the family reunion with Mancini on board and Brad Dourif returning once again to voice Chucky the Killer Doll. Cult of Chucky looks like it will be a direct sequel to Curse of Chucky while also tying up story-lines from previous films considering that Alex Vincent (Andy in Child’s Play and Child’s Play 2) and Jennifer Tilly (Tiffany in Bride of Chucky and Seed of Chucky) are going to return alongside Fiona Dourif (Nica in Curse of Chucky).
Cult of Chucky will be a whirlwind production, with a release currently aiming for Fall 2017 – just in time for Halloween! And let’s hope we get a practical effects doll and not CGI Chucky! Yay!
Bloody Disgusting lists the films synopsis as: “Confined to an asylum for the criminally insane for the past four years, Nica Pierce is erroneously convinced that she, not Chucky, murdered her entire family. But when her psychiatrist introduces a new therapeutic “tool” to facilitate his patients’ group sessions — an all-too-familiar “Good Guy” doll with an innocently smiling face — a string of grisly deaths begins to plague the asylum, and Nica starts to wonder if maybe she isn’t crazy after all. Andy Barclay, Chucky’s now-grown-up nemesis from the original Child’s Play, races to Nica’s aid. But to save her he’ll have to get past Tiffany, Chucky’s long-ago bride, who will do anything, no matter how deadly or depraved, to help her beloved devil doll.”
