(Short Film) Nathan Duce’s Peephole

Many years ago – ok, eight years ago – HorrorSociety was founded by my boss Mitchell Wells in hopes of shining a brighter light on independent horror films that would normally go unseen by the public. While the site has incorporated more mid and big budget movies to our news-feed in recent years, we’re still big supporters of the little guys and I still find it a privilege to show b-movie film-makers some love. With that said, let me introduce you to Nathan Duce’s Peephole.

While it sounds dirty, Peephole is actually Nathan Duce’s first attempt at horror. Peephole is a three and a half minute short film that follows the trend of social media being disastrous in real life. Here, we find a young woman returning to her apartment when she starts getting text messages from an unknown number. Following the clues as a cyber-sleuth, the young woman finds a social media feed with videos of her while out and about during her day. The videos even follow her back to her apartment.

Now, Peephole is timed correctly, contains a popular story-line, and features some good camera work. It’s an independent short film, so I can’t critique it to death, but I will say – I wished there was dialogue instead of making it a short film. I’ve never been a fan of “silent movies” and not having one line of spoken word subtracted from the overall feel of the movie and will hurt the audience’s chance of connecting with the young woman. I hope Nathan Duce drops that style in future projects, but Peephole was a decent first showing of his horror skills.
