Prey (2017) Review

“Good Morning Morgan, today is march 13, 2023…”

Prey (2017) while in development took a long delay, the title was originally supposed to be a totally different game, and a sequel to the 2006 title Prey created by Human Head Studios. In the original title you played as a Native American named Domasi “Tommy” Tawodi along with his girlfriend and grandfather are abducted by a mysterious race of aliens. The title gained enough followers for a sequel known as Prey 2, in which you would have played as a U.S. Marshall on an airplane which is abducted during the events of the first game, as he awakens on a mysterious planet with no prior memories and become a bounty hunter. Unfortunately the sequel never made it past development as the project was scrapped then the rights to the title was picked up by Bethesda, as Arkane Studio (Dishonored) was chosen for the development of the IP.

Story:
You start off waking up in a luxurious loft, as an AI greets you. You play as Morgan Yu who is recruited by his or her brother Alex Yu to help with mysterious research on the space station known as Talos I, which orbits around earth’s moon. During a research test, the staff is attacked by an unknown being and Morgan passes out from being sedated only to wake to repeat the morning cycle. The truth comes out as Morgan discovers that he or she has been on the station for quite a while as a containment outbreak has occurred on the station and the mysterious beings are known as typhons. The typhons were being researched on due to their unique abilities such as telekinesis, mimicking objects, and energy projectiles. Morgan is then contacted by a modified robot named January, who informs her that she must destroy the space station in order to stop the typhons from ever reaching earth. But Alex Yu is claiming that he can save the station and the research. Ultimately the choice is yours… All I can say for the ending without spoiling it, is how powerful your choices actually affected the game’s ending. Truly an amazing ending.

Gameplay and Mechanics:
In Prey, Talos I is your high tech playground. You can basically play the game however you want from run and gun to full on stealth. Craft items to help you survive, as well as hacking drones and defenses for your benefit. Throughout my time playing Prey, I had the sense of nostalgia, the gameplay felt like Bioshock which absolutely was amazing and worked well. Discover hidden secrets such as emails explaining the station’s events prior to the containment outbreak, supplies, and shortcuts to avoid enemies.

Overall:
There hasn’t been a game in a while that has truly peaked my interests but Prey easily met my expectations and more, the atmosphere, the dialogue, the gameplay and the story were blended so well. I can’t stop recommending it, Arkane studios is so far 3 for 3 on amazing single player only titles lately following Dishonored and Dishonored 2.

Prey is available now on Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and Windows (steam) for $39.99 usd
